Solid Waste & Recycling

The Solid Waste and Recycling (SW&R) Department provides waste disposal services to the public in the most cost effective and environmentally sound manner while continuing to support existing environmental and recycling programs. The SW&R Department consists of a municipal solid waste landfill, a household hazardous waste facility (HHW) and a dual stream materials recovery facility (MRF). Other programs offered by the SW&R Department are free public recycling drop off sites throughout the valley (Vail, Avon, Edwards, Eagle, Gypsum and Red Cliff), textile recycling at the landfill, reuse area at the landfill and metal recycling. Please contact the SW&R Department for further information.

I Want To...

Solid Waste Disposal - Eagle County owns and operates the landfill through its Facilities Department.  The Landfill team is comprised of eight individuals who oversee the entire operation (Scale House, Landfill, and Construction and Demolition Diversion Site).  The landfill provides a solid waste facility for Eagle County residents and an environmentally safe containment area for all acceptable refuse while insuring compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations.

Household Hazardous Waste & Very Small Quantity Generator Program (VSQG) Facility
- The primary goal of the Eagle County Household Hazardous Waste Program is to provide the residents of the county with a safe, convenient, and free method of disposal for their household hazardous waste. This will have the benefit of preventing hazardous materials from entering the landfill. It will also help to reduce contamination in surface and ground water, and protect sanitation workers, children, and animals from the dangers of improper disposal of household hazardous waste. The goal of the Eagle County VSQG will be to assist local businesses in disposing of their hazardous wastes in a safe, timely, and more economical manner.  This will also have the benefit of reducing or eliminating improper disposal of household hazardous waste in the Eagle County landfill.

Material Recovery Facility- The Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) began operations in January 2010. This facility is designed to process, for market, the dual stream materials collected in Eagle County and adjoining jurisdictions. Having this facility in place and operational removes the barrier to our local recycling programs of distance-to-market. Collected materials are separated, baled and prepared for direct shipment to end users. The facility utilizes both automated and manual sorting techniques to separate glass; steel/tin containers;  #1 PET through #7 plastic containers; and aluminum beverage containers.  In addition, newspaper and corrugated cardboard are also processed. This facility is owned and operated by Eagle County.
