May 4, 2023 - Eagle County turns 140 in 2023, and residents are invited to join in the celebration. Eagle County was created by the state assembly on February 11, 1883, and named for the Eagle River. The county is celebrating with a "Then and Now" photo exhibit, a historical speaker series, and many more exciting events.

The 140th-anniversary celebration speaker series continues on Wednesday, May 10 at 5:30 p.m. at the Avon Public Library, featuring “Rosie the Riveter,” the name given to women war workers during World War II.

During WWII, Colorado women worked at the Remington Arms Factory, producing as many as six million bullets a day for U.S. troops. Historian Gail M. Beaton created a composite character drawn from the records and memories of these women war workers. The Chautauqua-style presentation reveals women’s war work, the home front, and the changes in roles and expectations of women during World War II. Following the presentation, members of the audience are encouraged to ask questions of the character, followed by questions to the historian behind the character.

Twenty photos of Eagle County communities were selected from the county’s digital archive ranging from the 1800s to the 1970s. Each old photo is paired with a recent photo of either the same location or similar activity. Visit the exhibit and see for yourself what changed, and what did not.
