March 16, 2023 - The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is supporting Eagle and Garfield counties with designing safety improvements on Cottonwood Pass. The goal of this planning effort is to identify safety improvement options for 14 identified locations, six in Eagle County and eight in Garfield County. These locations were selected by the counties based on known safety issues.

Since the project began in Summer 2022, public input has played a large role in shaping the development of the site design options. Input received from public meetings held in July and subsequent input from property owners and residents was considered as design options were developed for each of the 14 project sites.

A second round of in-person public open house meetings are scheduled for 2023. Refined improvement concepts and results of their evaluation will be presented for public comment before the concepts are documented in a report to conclude this project phase. With the information provided by this project, Eagle and Garfield counties will determine next steps for implementing improvements.

In addition to public input, land survey mapping was completed and traffic, geotechnical, and environmental conditions were gathered. Consultation with natural resource specialists allowed CDOT and the counties to better understand the effects improvements could have to wildlife, wetlands, and water quality in the area. Summaries and presentation materials from task force meetings are available on the project web page: www.codot.gov/projects/cottonwood-pass-concept-design.

Additional time was added to the originally planned schedule to allow for direct coordination with property owners adjacent to improvements. This coordination is ongoing and feedback is being used to evaluate and refine the design concepts.
