Animals available for adoption can be visited at the Eagle County Animal Shelter. We encourage people looking for a new pet to come spend some time with them in an effort to ensure a good match. Shelter hours are Tuesday - Saturday 10 a.m. - 3 p.m and Mondays and Sundays by appointment only. All adoptable dogs and cats have been vaccinated and spayed or neutered. Although we take every precaution to ensure the health of our shelter animals, no guarantee of any kind can be given.
Adopting a new animal is an important decision. When you decide to adopt a new pet, you are making a long term commitment to care for and provide for the animal. In return, you will receive the unconditional love only a pet can offer.
It is the policy of the Animal Shelter that all dogs and cats be spayed or neutered and vaccinated before they are considered to be adoptable. Any person wishing to adopt an animal must be at least 18 years of age or older and adoptions are handled on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are a renter, please be prepared to provide landlord contact information along with a lease. You must provide photo ID for any adoption.

Our shelter offers several different types of foster care programs. We are always looking for foster homes that may be able to accommodate bottle babies, mothers with their litters, special needs animals, or just animals that need time away from the shelter. The shelter has a variety of opportunities for volunteers ages 10 and over to socialize with and exercise our animals and help at adoption events. Impounds
Animals found by citizens or Animal Services staff that are impounded at the shelter are held for at least five days. If no one claims the animal, it is examined by our veterinarian and eventually put up for adoption. Impounded animals currently at the shelter are shown below. If you have lost a pet and see it pictured here, please call us at 970-328-3647 immediately to make arrangements to pick up your friend. One of the best parts of our job is reuniting pets with their owners. There will be a fee when you come to pick up your pet, so please bring cash, check or credit card.
Lost & Found Pets
Please report lost and found pets to Animal Services. Be sure to provide the location the pet was found, or last seen, and your contact information. You may submit a lost or found pet online or call us at 970-328-DOGS. Lost/Found reports will be maintained for 1 month from the day of submission. If you are still looking for your lost pet after that time, you may re-submit a new report to keep your information active on our list.
To report lost or found animals in the Town of Basalt, please call 970-927-4316.
In addition to contacting us online, please call 970-328-DOGS to report lost or found animals as soon as possible. We may already have your animal at the shelter or have been contacted by the lost pet's owner.
Surrendering a pet
Eagle County Animal Shelter and Services is an open admission shelter that accepts animals as space permits for Eagle County residents only. Sometimes it may take up to 2 weeks for us to take an animal so please plan accordingly. Before bringing your pet into the shelter for surrender, we ask that you call us to schedule an appointment. We want to make sure to allow plenty of time to talk to you about your pet and understand the reason for surrender and how we can rehome them to the best of our ability.
All surrenders require a fee of $50 and any medical records. We will have you fill out a surrender application that explains the reason for surrender and information about that animal’s behavior. Anyone surrendering a pet must be over 18 years of age and able to show proof of I.D. The surrender process may take up to 30 minutes as we want to find out as much information as we can about your pet to help find a suitable home.
If we determine that your pet is not adoptable, please note that we may transfer it to a different facility or choose to euthanize. All animals we adopt out must be safe for our community and we take this very seriously.
Before surrendering a pet, we ask that you explore other options as a shelter environment can be stressful to many animals. Reaching out to family, friends, and social media can be a big help with rehoming as well as breed-specific rescues. If you have questions about behavior issues, please reach out to us as we may be able to assist with answers. We know that surrendering a pet can be a very emotional experience so we want to do whatever we can to assist. Please check out our resource guide before calling to make a surrender appointment.

- Cats $70 - Includes spay/neuter, vaccinations, testing for feline leukemia, deworming and microchip.
- Kittens (up to 6 months) $100 - Includes spay/neuter, vaccinations, testing for FELV/FIV, deworming and microchip.
- Dogs $100 - Includes spay/neuter, vaccinations, microchip, heartworm testing, deworming and Eagle County dog license.
- Puppies (up to 6 months) $150 - Includes spay/neuter, initial vaccinations, microchip, deworming and Eagle County dog license (if dog is 4 months and older).
