County to waive delinquent interest, suspend interest accruals on property taxes

Contact: Teak Simonton, Eagle County Treasurer, 970-328-2025,

June 26, 2020 - The Colorado Legislature recently passed a bill that gives county treasurers the authority to waive delinquent interest between June 15 and Oct. 1 on  2019 property taxes payable in 2020. Previous executive orders issued by Governor Polis allowed the same type of waiver; however the duration period for these orders ended on April 30.

Based on the new legislation, Eagle County Treasurer Teak Simonton, in collaboration with the Eagle County Board of Commissioners, will waive delinquent interest and suspend interest accruals for any taxpayer who still owes current year property taxes. The waiver and suspension will begin on June 16 and end on Sept. 30. Interest on delinquent property tax payments from prior years and redemption interest on property tax liens are excluded from this waiver.

Beginning Oct. 1, interest will accrue at 1% per month, per Colorado law, and be subject to advertising and distraint fees as scheduled. The Eagle County tax lien sale will be held online this year on Nov. 19, and unpaid taxes will be sold as liens to ensure that taxing authorities, including school districts, special districts, municipalities and the county receive their expected tax revenues to run their operations before the end of the year.

Treasurer Teak Simonton encourages those who are able to pay their property taxes now to do so. Questions can be directed to, or to 970-328-8860. For information on payment options, visit
