Governor Hickenlooper Bikes and Supports the Eagle Valley Trail

Contact: Ellie Caryl, ECO Trails Program Manager, 970-328-3523,

Sept. 21, 2016 - Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper paid Eagle County a visit at the end of August to get to know the Eagle Valley Trail and review the planned Town of Eagle to Horn Ranch trail project that was named to his “16 in 2016” of top priority trail projects in this state. The Governor was accompanied by his appointed “Bike Czar” Ken Gart, Colorado Department of Transportation Director Shailen Bhatt, Chris Kehmeier of the Department of Natural Resources and other state staff.

The visit included a 5 mile bike ride on the Eagle Valley Trail between Avon and Edwards to Trail to view the trail’s connection to schools, public open space, active parks, multi-family residential, transit stops and commercial areas. The tour also included stops at the new trail section under construction in Avon that is funded by ECO, Avon, GOCO and CDOT as well as a visit with 6th and 8th graders from the Berry Creek Middle School. Scott Prince of Avon Town Council and Andy Jessen of Town of Eagle Trustees joined the tour.

The group then headed to Horn Ranch Open Space between Wolcott and Eagle for a project presentation by the Town of Eagle and Eagle County followed by a picnic lunch and a short walk on part of the trail route through Horn Ranch. The Governor and CDOT Director Bhatt made remarks in support of improved bicycle and pedestrian facilities statewide to benefit the state’s economy, environment and community health. Also attending were representatives of the agencies or private landowners that are partnering on the project, including the Town of Eagle, Bureau of Land Management, Eagle County School District, Red Mountain Ranch Partnership, Union Pacific Railroad, CDOT, Eagle County Open Space program and the Colorado Department of Parks and Wildlife.

The Eagle to Horn Ranch Trail Project is currently competing for $2 million of Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) funding to build the $7 million project in 2017 and 2018.  At 6.5 miles, it will be longest trail project built in Eagle County and requires cooperation with many partners. The project will close the largest single gap in the Eagle Valley Trail system and be the first step in a 3 project-process to link “upvalley” to “downvalley” via paved trail separated from Highway 6 for the purposes of recreation and transportation. It begins in Eagle near Nogal Gulch Open Space and Chambers Road and ends at the Horn Ranch Open Space. The estimated project cost is $7 million for construction and land leases. The GOCO Board of Directors will announce the funding decisions on Oct. 7 at their meeting in Carbondale.
