Open Space / Outdoor Recreation

Approved by voters in 2002, Eagle County’s Open Space Program is funded by a dedicated 1.5 mill levy tax on property. The Open Space Fund currently collects nearly $4 million per year for the express purpose of supporting activities and costs associated with the acquisition and preservation of open space. Criteria to evaluate land for open space acquisition includes scenic value, regional heritage, wildlife habitat, sensitive lands, value as a buffer between developed and sensitive lands, and access to rivers and recreation.
