May 30, 2014 – Energy Smart Colorado has received the National Environmental Health Association’s Excellence in Sustainability award for 2014. The award program recognizes organizations, businesses, associations, and individuals who are solving environmental challenges by using innovative and environmentally sustainable practices.

According to Eagle County’s Environmental Policy Planner Adam Palmer, Energy Smart Colorado was recognized for helping homeowners complete over 3,000 home energy improvements and addressing over 200 instances where occupant health was threatened. In addition, reviewers noted the program’s creation of a revolving loan fund and database, as well as its innovative marketing and outreach efforts.

Development of the Energy Smart Colorado program was originally funded through a Department of Energy Better Buildings grant of $4.9 million, awarded in 2010. The program began as a partnership between Eagle, Pitkin and Gunnison counties and their non‐profit partners, working together to provide residents access to energy coaching, energy assessments, referrals to qualified contractors, and financial assistance for energy improvements. The program now operates as a regional entity administered by local non-profit partners, and is in the process of applying for 501c3 status.
