Smoke in the Eagle River Valley

Smoke in the Eagle River Valley is coming in from fires to the west.

If smoke is thick or becomes thick in your neighborhood you may want to remain indoors. This is especially true for those with heart disease, respiratory illnesses, the very young, and the elderly.

The School Resource Officer (SRO) is first and foremost a police officer. SRO’s have the same authority and responsibilities as any police officer. The SRO is not a school employee, but they work closely with school staff to resolve problems. The SRO will respond to any situation at school requiring law enforcement intervention such as fights, thefts, drugs, etc.

The Sheriff’s Office (ECSO) SRO program began in January 1999 and is the result of a partnership between the ECSO and the Eagle County School District (ECSD). We currently have two certified SROs covering 12 public schools full time and assisting ECSO deputies at 6 private schools in Eagle County.

SRO as Teacher: The SRO will teach classes on law related topics such as drinking and driving, dangers of drug use, constitutional law, etc. The opportunity to teach in classes allows SROs to interact with students in a low stress, non-adversarial situation.

SRO as Counselor: The SRO frequently serves as a resource for students in times of need. Students, after getting to know their SRO, will confide in the officer and ask their opinion on a variety of topics they might not feel comfortable discussing with school administration, friends, or parents. The SRO can also refer a student to another agency for further assistance.
