Newest member of the Sheriff's Office - K9 Jake

k9 jakeEagle County Sheriff’s Deputy Jake Best has a new partner.  Jake is a two year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback mix trained in narcotic detection, human tracking, and evidence search.

K9 Jake was one day away from being euthanized when professional K9 trainer, Sean Hartley, from Sunrise Kennels and Dog Training Center rescued him.  Sean spent months working with K9 Jake before he was placed with Deputy Best.

In the two months K9 Jake has been with the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office he has taken small amounts of marijuana and drug paraphernalia off of the streets.  

K9 Jake also assisted in the arrest of a suspect wanted for assault and domestic violence who attempted to flee officers on foot.

The Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit is comprised of two K9s who are certified in narcotics detection and patrol work. These teams provide support for different divisions and units within the Sheriff’s Office, including patrol, investigation, detentions and the Special Operations Unit.  The K9 Unit is on call and responds to a large number of different calls for services within the county. K9 Jake replaces K9 Fantom who retired in 2010.
