EAGLE COUNTY, CO - Dressed in black and white striped shirts and black pants with Eagle County Jail 328-8564 stenciled on them, Eagle County Detention Facility inmates, Carlos Martinez Lopez, Joseph Mascarenas, Bryon Lavin, Tony Carthy, and Francisco Rodriguez are filling bags with sand to help local towns combat flooding problems. Inmates spent two days filling sandbags in flood affected areas throughout Eagle County, under the direction of an Eagle County Detention Deputy.

The utilization of inmate labor came about due to the exigency of needing volunteers to fill sandbags in the community.  Over a two day period the inmates were able to bag over 2,100 bags of sand in Vail, Avon, and Gypsum.

"The motivation and commitment of our inmates to do the right thing - is very much a part of their rehabilitative path," Sheriff Joseph Hoy said. "When they return home to our community after serving their sentences, they do so with the knowledge that they made a difference in a time when our community needed them most."
