Dynamite Found in Red Cliff

Contact: Shannon Cordingly, Public Information Officer, 970-376-7000

RED CLIFF, CO- Earlier this month, twenty sticks of very old dynamite were found by Excel Energy while working on electrical poles in the area.  The Eagle County Sheriff’s Office (ECSO) was able to safely remove the explosives from the area, with assistance from the Grand Junction Bomb Squad.

As we enter into the spring season with rain and snow runoff, the ECSO would like to remind the citizens of Eagle County to be extra vigilant for the presence of uncovered explosives, especially in and around former mining areas.  Older explosives can become very unstable; simply touching them can be enough to set them off.  Something as small as an old blasting cap the size of a pencil could cause the loss of several fingers.

Some general safety tips to follow:

  • Avoid any contact with suspicious items
  • Remember the location of the suspicious items (mark area if possible)
  • Relay this information to local law enforcement
  • Most importantly:  DO NOT TOUCH!
