Deputy in stable condition following accident on I-70

Deputy John BrownleeEagle County Sheriff’s Deputy John Brownlee at about 1:30 a.m. on Saturday morning (5/1), while exiting his patrol car to investigate an accident on I-70 at about mile marker 154, was struck by two vehicles whose drivers' had lost control. Deputy Brownlee suffered serious injury to his right leg and was transported to Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs by ambulance, conscious and alert. Deputy Brownlee underwent surgery at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning.  He is being attended to at present by family and friends, including girlfriend. 

Both drivers were arrested and are currently in jail on a variety of charges.  Driver #1 is charged with DUI and Vehicular Assault.  Driver #2 is charged with DUI, Vehicular Assault, Careless Driving and Hit and Run.  (See Colorado State Patrol release.)

The nine months of service Deputy Brownlee has provided to the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office has been exemplary and many times has offered to work extra details to help his crew and the organization. His law enforcement service extends to Mesa County Sheriff’s Office where Brownlee first began his career and served several years before joining Eagle County.  A decorated, eight-year United States Marine Corp Sergeant, Brownlee lists his service to his country as one of his greatest accomplishment, second only to being the father of his two kids, ages 8 and 9.
