Landfill tipping fees will see 2020 adjustments

Contact: Jesse Masten, Solid Waste & Recycling Manager, 970-328-3472,

Jan. 10, 2020 – Tipping fees for the disposal of landscape material at the Eagle County Landfill will increase from $23.10 per ton to $39 per ton in the near future. Landscape material is organic waste and includes grass clippings, leaves, tree trimmings and sod. The Eagle County Commissioners approved the increase during their Jan. 7 meeting to incentivize diversion of this material to the local composting facility.

Waste diversion is a priority outlined in the county’s strategic plan as an avenue to decrease greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The goal for waste diversion is 30% by 2030 with a current diversion rate of 17% in the Eagle Valley. By increasing the landscape material tipping fee, the county hopes to encourage diversion with a lower cost option for that material through the Commercial Compost Facility operated by Vail Honeywagon, located at 955 Ute Creek Road in Wolcott.

The Solid Waste & Recycling Department is operated as an Enterprise Fund. This means it derives its revenue from fees paid by those who use its services, not by taxes. All services offered for waste disposal and recycling must fit within the framework of a balanced budget.

Other fees that will see nominal changes include Construction and Demolition, Concrete/Dirt (contaminated), Contaminated Soil, and Non-Friable Asbestos. These fees will be rounded up to the nearest whole dollar amount to help balance out the projected revenue loss from landscape material diversion.
