Eagle County Public Health awarded $1 million in state grants

Contact: Karen Koenemann, Healthy Communities Manager, 970-328-2610 or

July 28, 2105 - Eagle County Public Health & Environment has received more than $1 million in grant funding from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment to address cancer, obesity, and tobacco use and exposure. The award will be used to fund two regional programs: the WorkWell Collaborative and the West Mountain Tobacco Education, Cessation and Prevention Program.

The WorkWell Collaborative will support employers in Eagle, Grand, Jackson, Pitkin and Summit counties in offering evidence-based, cost effective and sustainable worksite wellness and safety programs. The three-year grant award totals $675,000.

The West Mountain Tobacco Education, Cessation, and Prevention Program will work in Eagle, Garfield, and Pitkin counties to promote tobacco cessation, reduce initiation of tobacco use, decrease tobacco prevalence among youth, and decrease exposure to secondhand smoke. The total for the three-year grant is $352,000.
The grant funding comes as a result of Amendment 35, which was approved by Colorado voters in 2004 and increased taxes on cigarettes and other tobacco products. The revenue is designated for health care services and tobacco education aimed at improving the health of all Coloradans.
