County to host community conversation on aging well

Contact: Karen Koenemann, Healthy Communities Manager, at 970-328-2610 or

June 30, 2015 – Ask any local over 60 and a majority will say they have every intention of remaining in the county as they age. Eagle County Public Health is spearheading an effort to help them do just that. Participants in the year-long Aging Well Community Planning Initiative will host a community conversation from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. July 15 at Colorado Mountain College in Edwards.

The conversation will be facilitated to gather community input and opinion on everything from healthy activities for the older demographic to housing, transportation, and community involvement. In addition, a panel of experts will talk about the challenges and opportunities for creating a community where residents can age in place.

“Older adults are strong assets to our community and they want to remain in the place they know and love,” said Healthy Communities Manager Karen Koenemann. “There are some basic things they’ll need to be able to do that here.”
A steering committee made up of a cross-section of the community has been meeting over the last six months to brainstorm what it takes to “age in place with the highest possible quality of life” in Eagle County. The committee’s goal is to develop and implement a five-year action plan that will start to break down the barriers to aging in place.

The public is invited to attend the community conversation to share their perspectives. Space is limited, so attendees are asked to RSVP no later than July 10 to 970-328-8831.
