Eagle County receives grant money to fight bark beetles

Contact: Eric Lovgren, Wildfire Mitigation Manager, 970-328-8742 or eric.lovgren@eaglecounty.us

Eagle County will receive over $80,000 in grants for removal of pine bark beetle infested trees on 50 acres of land near homes on Bellyache Ridge. Starting June 1, work will begin on improvements to defensible space surrounding homes, evacuation route protection and hazardous tree mitigation.

Fire Mitigation Manager Eric Lovgren says collaborations with residents and other agencies has been the key to this program’s success. “This is the third year that Eagle County has received grant funding from the Colorado State Forest Service to reduce hazardous fuel buildup associated with the Mountain Pine Beetle epidemic. We’re pleased the State recognizes the amount of work home owners on Bellyache Ridge have completed over the last several years and the need to do more,” Lovgren said.

Additional partners include the Jouflas family of Wolcott and Eagle River Fire Protection District (ERFPD). Both Eagle County and ERFPD will provide matching funds for this project. Local tree removal contractors can contact Lovgren for bidding information or attend the second annual Eagle County Tree Service Summit from 12:30 to 3 p.m. May 6 at the Eagle County Building, located at 500 Broadway in Eagle.  Approximately 10 acres of mitigation work was completed in 2009; all timber cut will be used for lumber, firewood or biomass fuel.
