Eagle County lags behind nation in Census participation

As of this week, over half the nation has returned their Census form. Currently, Eagle County has a Census form return rate of 28 percent, well below the national return rate of 52 percent. The Census Bureau is challenging all communities to achieve a higher rate in 2010 than they did in 2000. Eagle County had a 48 percent return rate in 2000.

Through the Census Bureau’s “Take 10 Challenge Tracker Map,” Eagle County residents can track the progress of their community’s participation in the census by viewing what percentage of households have mailed back their census forms. To view the map, visit 2010.census.gov/2010census/take10map/.

Census data help determine how more than $400 billion in Federal funds are distributed to state, local and tribal areas each year. A complete count of our community in the census will help ensure that Eagle County receives its share of census-based funding for the next ten years. If everyone across the nation mailed back their form, taxpayers could reduce the cost of taking the census by about $1.5 billion.

Those who have not received a Census form, have lost their form or have questions about the form can visit a Questionnaire Assistance Center (QAC) in Eagle County. In Vail, a QAC will be hosted at the Vail Public Library’s Community Room, located at 292 West Meadow Dr., from noon to 5 p.m. on April 2 and 16; from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 5, 7 and 9; and from noon to 4 p.m. on April 12 and 14. In Eagle, a QAC will be hosted at the Eagle Public Library, located at 500 Broadway St., on Wednesdays and Fridays in April from 1 to 5 p.m. Visit the 2010 Census Web site at 2010.census.gov for more information.
