Dec. 11, 2013 – Eagle County is celebrating the closing on the Horn Ranch conservation and recreation project. The acquisition by the county permanently protects 403 acres and 7,300 linear feet of the Eagle River between Wolcott and Eagle.

The project represents a multi-year effort by Eagle County’s Open Space Program, Eagle Valley Land Trust, Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) and The Piney Valley Ranches Trust. Other supporters include Trout Unlimited, Eagle River Watershed Council, American Rivers, Bureau of Land Management, Town of Eagle, and numerous river guides and outfitters.

Total project cost was $3.6 million, with $3 million coming from Eagle County’s dedicated Open Space Fund and $600,000 provided through a grant from GOCO.

Under the terms of the deal, 288 acres will be managed for public recreational access, habitat conservation, and viewshed protection. An additional 115 acres remain in private ownership.  Both the public and private portions of Horn Ranch are protected by conservation easements held by the Eagle Valley Land Trust.

Plans to improve access to the public portion of the property will be developed in 2014.  Additionally, the Open Space Program acquired a trail easement through a portion of the private property and the right to lead guided hikes to the historic stone quarry.
