Eagle County Public Health to host screening of HBO’s “The Weight of the Nation”

Contact: Jessica Hankins, Healthy Communities Coordinator at 970-328-8855 or jessica.hankins@eaglecounty.us

While Eagle County is ranked one of the healthiest counties in Colorado, overweight and obesity rates continue to climb. In Eagle County, 46 percent of adults age 20 and older are overweight or obese, while 18 percent of Eagle County’s children and adolescents ages two to 14 are overweight or obese. As part of the effort to help combat obesity, Eagle County Public Health is hosting a free screening of the HBO documentary, “The Weight of the Nation,” at 6 p.m. July 12 at the Avon Public Library.

Three years in the making, “The Weight of the Nation” examines the facts and myths of this urgent public health issue, showing how obesity affects the health of the nation and the health care system. The film features case studies and interviews with leading experts, individuals and families struggling with obesity. The series also highlights how individuals, worksites and communities are making positive changes.

Eagle County Public Health, in partnership with the Avon Public Library and Vail Valley Medical Center, will screen two segments from the HBO documentary. A comprehensive discussion and question and answer session will follow the screening, and healthy refreshments will be provided. The event will be offered in English and Spanish simultaneously.

“Obesity has become a concern for the health of Eagle County,” said Eagle County Public Health Director Jennifer Ludwig. “It is important that we facilitate community action now to help reduce the obesity rates and improve the health of our community,” she said.
