County transitions to statewide hotline for reporting child abuse

Contact: Kendra Kleinschmidt, Children, Family & Adult Services Manager, 970-328-8827, kendra.kleinschmidt@eaglecounty.us

Oct. 12, 2016 – Eagle County has transitioned to the statewide hotline for reporting suspected child abuse or neglect. The hotline is staffed by trained call takers 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with services available in both English and Spanish. The number is 1-844-CO-4-KIDS (1-844-264-5437).

The hotline launched on Jan. 1, 2015 and is designed to provide a single, easy-to-remember, toll-free phone number for use from anywhere. All calls are routed to the county where the child resides. Callers may remain anonymous and reports are confidential.

Many counties, including Summit and Pitkin, have been using the centralized hotline for several months. Officials say Eagle County’s participation will help provide quality and consistency across the region and the state. Previously, county employees staffed two local hotline numbers - one each in the Eagle and Roaring Fork valleys. The transition free up local resources to assess referrals and focus on providing assistance to families and children in need.

While the hotline provides a quick connection to the county, those who witness child abuse in progress should call 911. For more information, contact Kendra Kleinschmidt, manager of Eagle County’s Children, Family & Adult Services, at 970-328-8827.
