County to host workshop for seniors on scams

Contact: Grant Jackson, Adult Protection Caseworker, 970-328-8836 or grant.jackson@eaglecounty.us

In collaboration with the Colorado Attorney General’s Office, Eagle County’s Adult Protective Services will host an informational workshop on fraudulent information and scams for seniors at 1 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Golden Eagle Community Center, located at 715 Broadway St. in Eagle. All community members are invited to attend the free session.

“We’ve seen a recent increase in the number of local seniors being taken advantage of by telemarketing, mail, online and other scams,” said Grant Jackson, Adult Protection Caseworker for Eagle County. “Some have lost thousands of dollars to seemingly reputable businesses offering great opportunities.”

Colorado Attorney General John W. Suthers will speak to attendees about preventing, recognizing and reporting fraudulent and predatory companies and scams. Caregivers for seniors, social workers and older adults are all strongly encouraged to attend the workshop.

According to Jackson, scam artists are very skillful at what they do and can fool even the smartest person. “It’s our hope that through education and awareness we can help protect our seniors and other community members from falling prey to these scam artists,” he said.

Eagle County Adult Protective Services responds to reports of the abuse, exploitation, mistreatment or neglect (including self-neglect or neglect by others), of at-risk adults who are, due to age or disability, unable to advocate for themselves. Suspected or known incidents of adult abuse, neglect, and exploitation should be reported to Eagle County Adult Protective Services.
