County offers immunizations for international travelers

Contact: Bethany Van Wyk, Public Health Nurse Supervisor, 970-328-8826

Pre-travel counseling and immunizations for international travelers are now being offered at Eagle County Public Health’s Avon office, located at 100 W. Beaver Creek Blvd., by appointment only. The program is intended to help protect community members from illness and increase the likelihood of travelers remaining safe and healthy during a journey and return home.

“For every 100,000 people who travel internationally, 75,000 may experience some type of health problem; and one in ten become ill enough to seek medical attention during or after their trip,” said Bethany Van Wyk, Nurse Supervisor for Eagle County Public Health. According to Van Wyk, a visit to a travel clinic may reduce a traveler’s risk of becoming ill from disease by supplying recommended immunizations, advising travelers of potential risks to their health and educating travelers on how to prevent illness while abroad. “Travel vaccines are important because international travelers are exposed to a wide variety of diseases while abroad, and Eagle County offers those vaccines at a reasonable cost,” said Van Wyk.

Initial funding for the project was supplied by an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant from the State of Colorado. The program will be sustained through county dollars and fees for service. Prices vary by vaccine. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 970-328-9813.
