County cracks down on public assistance fraud

Contact: Rita Woods, Fiscal and Operations Director, Health & Human Services, 970-328-8817 or rita.woods@eaglecounty.us.

Dec. 8, 2014 – Eagle County’s newly formed Quality Assurance (QA) Unit within Human Services is proving its worth. In a case finalized last week, a defendant pled guilty to felony theft related to public assistance benefits paid fraudulently to her over the last two years. The county expects to receive full restitution of the $12,400 paid through its Food Assistance and Medicaid programs.

Following the discovery of a discrepancy in the defendant’s case file, the QA Unit enlisted the help of the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office to complete an investigation. The case was referred to the 5th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, which took the lead on negotiating the terms of the guilty plea. As part of her sentence, the defendant will be ineligible to receive benefits for the next four years.

Formed earlier this year, the Quality Assurance Unit is responsible for ensuring the appropriate distribution of funds through its financial assistance programs. While routine checks have always been conducted by caseworkers, the new unit allows for more in-depth investigation into potential fraud.

“It is certainly not our intent to scare away folks who need our services,” said Rita Woods, Fiscal and Operations Director for Health & Human Services. “Rather, we are striving to ensure the right people receive the right benefits. We take our fiscal responsibility to the community very seriously.”

Eagle County’s Human Services programs are funded through a combination of local, state and federal allocations. Woods expects the partnership with the Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office to continue as the QA Unit continues its work. For more information, contact Woods at 970-328-8817.
