March 31, 2011 – Eagle County’s Housing Department is pleased to announce it has received a weatherization grant from Northwest Colorado Council of Governments.  The grant was funded through the Governor’s Energy Office (GEO) Weatherization Program and will be used to make energy efficiency improvements to Golden Eagle Apartments in Eagle, including furnace replacements, insulation and air-sealing, and gutters and downspouts. The total scope of the project is valued at approximately $200,000.

Golden Eagle Apartments consists of 36 one-bedroom apartment units leased to income-eligible elderly and disabled tenants. The property was built in 1985 and purchased by Eagle County in 2002. Renovations at the property will begin next week and are scheduled for completion this summer. According to Housing Director Jill Klosterman, tenants will be able remain in their units while the work is underway. “These improvements will increase the energy efficiency of the property overall, while decreasing individual utility bills and making the apartments more comfortable for our residents,” said Klosterman.

The GEO Weatherization Program is a federally funded program managed by the GEO that seeks to improve the comfort, safety and energy efficiency of Colorado’s low-income housing stock. Timing of the weatherization project coincides with the opening of the Eagle County Energy Resource Center where Energy Smart Home Assessments, free quick-fix items, rebates and access to financing for home energy improvements are available to all residents and homeowners of Eagle County.  For more information on the Energy Resource Center, visit www.energysmartcolorado.com.
