County receives housing award

The National Advisory Board of the J. Ronald Terwilliger Center for Workforce Housing has named Miller Ranch a winner of the 2009 Jack Kemp Workforce Housing Models of Excellence Awards. Miller Ranch was selected for its ability to achieve workforce affordability on a large scale, strong partnerships, innovative deed restrictions, and replicability. Miller Ranch was one of four winners chosen among seven finalists.

According to Alex Potente, managing director of Housing and Development for Eagle County, with nearly 40 applicants the national award is competitive and prestigious. "This project, a decade in the making and completed in 2006, was the result of a collaborative effort of a number of jurisdictions, including the Town of Vail, the Town of Avon and the Eagle County School District," said Potente. "Former Eagle County commissioner Tom Stone was instrumental in championing a public-private partnership at Miller Ranch," he said. "The support and foresight of our previous boards, as well as the successful implementation by current and former county staff, were integral to this achievement."

County Manager Keith Montag, who was the county's community development director at the time the project was conceived and constructed, said the project was one of the most rewarding of his tenure. "While a complex and at times difficult process, the development of Miller Ranch has yielded some of the most desirable workforce housing in the area," said Montag. "We're proud to have brought one of the first examples of 'New Urbanism' to the county.

The ULI Terwilliger Center for Workforce Housing was established by J. Ronald Terwilliger, chairman of Trammell Crow Residential, to expand housing opportunities for working families. The mission of the Center is to serve as a catalyst in increasing the availability of workforce housing in high-cost communities by harnessing the power of the private sector.  For additional information, contact Housing and Development Managing Director Alex Potente at 970-328-8698.
