County seeks input on fairgrounds sports complex

Fairgrounds Sports Complex Alternatives

Eagle County and the Western Eagle County Metropolitan Recreation District (WECMRD) are seeking public input on two master plan alternatives for the fairgrounds sports complex, which is being relocated due to gravel mining at the site. A work session to collect input on direction and desired components is scheduled during Tuesday’s regular meeting of the board of county commissioners, which begins at 9 a.m. Aug. 2. The meeting will be aired live on ecotv18 and archived for later viewing at www.ecotv18.com. All interested community members are encouraged to attend.

The redevelopment of the site is the result of a lease agreement with Lafarge North America, Inc. to mine the gravel under the existing sports complex. Per the agreement, Eagle County is not collecting royalties for the material extracted. Instead, Lafarge is providing funding for the relocation of the current playing fields and facilities.

Enhancements to the complex to meet current and future needs will also be discussed during the work session. WECMRD is considering funding additional upgrades.

Those unable to attend Tuesday’s meeting are encouraged to provide feedback no later than Aug. 1 to eagleadmin@eaglecounty.us. For more information, contact Eagle County Public Works Director Tom Johnson at 970-328-8882.
