June 26, 2015 – Eagle County has launched a new online map illustrating the wildfire hazard by area across the county. The map is available at www.eaglecounty.us/Building/Wildfire/Overview.

The customized wildfire hazard model was created for Eagle County by Anchor Point Group, a Boulder-based company specializing in wildfire management. Known as the National Hazard and Risk Model, or No-HARM, the state-of-the-art, GIS-based model offers homeowners, home buyers, developers, municipalities, fire districts and other stakeholders the most accurate information available to define wildfire threats throughout the county.

“Our role is to help improve public understanding of wildfire, and to assist communities in finding and sharing innovative solutions to potential negative wildfire impacts,” said Eagle County Wildfire Mitigation Specialist Eric Lovgren. “An essential first step in meeting this challenge is to have access to comprehensive data that clearly defines the wildfire threat to each neighborhood and community in Eagle County,” he said.

No-HARM utilizes advanced fire behavior modelling coupled with localized information on fuels, weather and topography to generate predictions of fire risk and hazard on a landscape scale. Factors such as parcel density, road system complexity, distance to fire stations, and other elements are also incorporated into wildfire hazard ratings. In addition, No-HARM evaluates areas that are susceptible to embers and smoke, in combination with traditional flame exposure.
