County to help fund highway design and cost study in Edwards

Contact: Eva Wilson, County Engineer, 970-328-3560 or eva.wilson@eaglecounty.us

Oct. 5, 2015 - The Eagle County Board of Commissioners has approved a partnership with the Edwards Metropolitan District on a conceptual design and cost development study for improvements along U.S. Highway 6 in Edwards. Each entity will contribute $20,000 toward the effort; Stolfus and Associates, Inc. has been engaged to do the work.

The project dovetails with the process underway by Eagle County and the Colorado Department of Transportation to develop a preferred alternative and design for the Edwards Spur Road and U.S. Highway 6 intersection, which is phase II of the I-70 interchange upgrade project. County Engineer Eva Wilson says that while upkeep of the roadway itself falls to CDOT, all surrounding pedestrian improvements, landscaping and their maintenance is a local responsibility.

The study will provide pedestrian facilities analysis, conceptual development and cost estimations for construction of U.S. Highway 6 improvements west of the Edwards Spur Road interchange, and cost estimations for the operations and maintenance of all improvements. The information will be used by both entities to determine potential funding streams and to plan for future growth in west Edwards.

The contribution represents the latest in a round of recent investments by the county commissioners toward economic development and infrastructure, including up to $25,000 in support of the Town of Eagle’s Eagle River Park design efforts; $250,000 toward design, environmental clearances and construction plan development for phase II of the I-70 interchange upgrade project in Edwards; and $900,000 toward improvements to the Highway 82 and El Jebel Road intersection in El Jebel.
