County and school district receive $178,000 for Safe Routes to School

Contact: Greg Schroeder, Project Engineer at 970-328-3567 or

Eagle County and Eagle County Schools have been awarded $178,000 by CDOT’s Safe Routes to School program. The grant will be used to fund safety improvements and educational activities near the five-school cluster located on Miller Ranch Road and Charter School Road in Edwards.
Traffic count data and a walkability study conducted with participation from local parents assisted in determining where construction improvements are needed.

The project will include construction of multiuse paths to connect neighborhoods directly to the five schools, installation of marked crosswalks with school zone flasher lights and sidewalk enhancements. Construction will begin in summer 2013 and is scheduled to be completed by the start of the 2013/2014 school year.

In addition to the improvements, June Creek Elementary School, Berry Creek Middle School, Eagle County Charter Academy, Red Canyon High School and Battle Mountain High School will participate in events that promote pedestrian and cycling safety. Activities geared toward educating students and parents on the benefits of walking and biking to school are included as part of the grant.
