Tax Credits for Working Families and Tax Help Colorado

Contact: Megan Burch, Economic Services Manager,

Tax season is upon us! The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and free tax assistance are two programs available to help low-income working families.
The Earned Income Tax Credit is a refundable tax credit from the Internal Revenue Service that eases the tax burden on lower-wage workers and helps supplement their incomes. The EITC targets families with incomes that range from below poverty to roughly double the federal poverty level. The amount of the credit rises with each dollar earned until it reaches a maximum level and phases out. Many workers throughout Colorado have earnings that fall short of what’s needed to make ends meet. But families earning less than about $52,000 per year may get as much as $6,000 or more in refunds from the EITC and other tax credits.

Coloradans may also visit a free tax site where they can file their taxes at no cost. A partnership between The Piton Foundation and the Colorado Community College System that was launched in 2007, Tax Help Colorado offers free tax preparation services to individuals who make less than $52,000.  For a listing of the 2015 tax site locations, including addresses and hours of operation visit the Get Your Taxes Done for Free flyer.
