Contact: Pat Hammon, Veteran’s Service Officer, at 970-390-4686 or

March 5, 2015 – A ceremony to honor local veteran Dick Dirkes will take place at noon on Sunday, March 8 at the Eagle County Building. Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet will present T-5 Squad Leader Dirkes with a Prisoner of War medal to honor his heroic actions during World War II. The event will be geared toward the veteran community and close friends. Prior to the medal presentation, coffee will be served and photo opportunities will be available starting at 11:15 a.m.

Dirkes served in the 10th Mountain Division and the 261st Regiment of the 65th Infantry Division during World War II. His platoon members were all killed or captured by a German SS Panzer unit in Austria in 1945. For his service and bravery he has also been awarded the Bronze Star.

According to Eagle County Veteran’s Service Officer Pat Hammon, Dirkes was hesitant to pursue his medals but was encouraged by his fellow soldiers to obtain the recognition. “We have been working together for a number of years to see this through the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of  Defense,” said Hammon. “With the assistance of the military affairs officer from Sen. Michael Bennet's office, Dick Dirkes will now receive his well-deserved medals.”
