Smoke in the Eagle River Valley

Smoke in the Eagle River Valley is coming in from fires to the west.

If smoke is thick or becomes thick in your neighborhood you may want to remain indoors. This is especially true for those with heart disease, respiratory illnesses, the very young, and the elderly.

Energy assistance (LEAP) available for low-income households

Contact: Tracie Beatty, Eagle County Economic Services, 970-328-8888,

Oct. 26, 2016 – The Low-income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP) will be available for eligible households starting Nov. 1 and will run through April 30, 2017. Qualifying households may receive assistance to pay a portion of their home heating bill.

For the 2016/2017 heating season, Goodwill Industries of Southern and Western Colorado will administer the program for Eagle and Pitkin Counties.

“By utilizing Goodwill over the past several years, those needing assistance received their benefits faster and at a lower cost to the county,” said Kathleen Lyons, economic services division director for Eagle County.  “We’re excited to continue this partnership again for LEAP season.”

Households may qualify for LEAP assistance if anyone within the home is a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident; heating costs are paid directly to an energy provider or is included in the rent; and gross monthly household income is within income guidelines.  The maximum gross monthly household income limit is 165 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, based on number of household members, as follows:

Household Size Monthly Gross Income

 1 $1,634
 2 $2,203
 3 $2,772
 4 $3,341
 5 $3,911
 6 $4,480
 7 $5,050
 8 $5,622
 Each Addt'l Person $572

Each qualified household may receive only one LEAP benefit for the winter season. In addition to income, factors such as type of heat being used, type of dwelling and number of people in the household are considered before an amount is awarded to an applicant. Funds for home heating system repairs may also be available.

Applications for LEAP may be picked up from any Eagle County Department of Human Services locations in Avon, Eagle or El Jebel.  Applications are also available at Pitkin County Health & Human Services in Aspen. To request an application by mail or for more information on LEAP and other available resources, call Discover Goodwill at 1-888-775-5327 or Heat Help at 1-866-432-8435.
