Open House on Beetle Salvage Project

Contact: Jan Burke, US Forest Service, 970-945-3246

The White River National Forest, Eagle/Holy Cross Ranger District, will be holding an open house on Thursday, March 4 at the Holy Cross Ranger District, 24747 Highway 24 in Minturn. The open house will take place between 4 and 6 p.m. to provide further information and gather public comments on a supplement to the 2008 Upper Eagle River Beetle Salvage Project environmental assessment.

The Upper Eagle River Beetle Salvage Project Decision Notice was signed on May 16th, 2008 under 36 CFR 218, Healthy Forests Restoration Act, Title I, Sec. 102 (a) (4) authorities.  Since implementation began, changed circumstances and new information requires additional analysis. Some of the changed circumstances include a blowdown event of dead lodgepole and the opportunity to use helicopters for logging near Minturn. Therefore, the Forest Service is in the process of conducting the supplemental environmental analysis to examine these changed circumstances and their effects.

Additional information about the project is available on the web at www.fs.fed.us/r2/whiteriver/projects/.

The purpose of the meeting is to provide another opportunity to refine the analysis based on public input. Forest Service specialists will be available to discuss your questions and help foster public understanding of this proposal.  Detailed descriptions of the proposed action and maps will be available at that meeting.  If you are unable to attend this meeting you are welcome to meet with someone from the Forest Service one-on-one.

For further information, contact Jan Burke at 970-945-3246 or Peech Keller at 970-262-3495.
