Eagle County taxpayers now have an easy way to view county spending online. The county’s newly launched “Open Book” site provides access to real-time financial data including budgets by fund, departmental expenditures, vendor information and purchasing card details. The site is part of the Open Eagle County web portal and can be accessed at www.eaglecounty.us/openbook.

Users of Open Book can either browse and sort information through 11 preset categories or download the data to a spreadsheet for additional analysis. Nearly all county payments can be viewed down to the transaction level and include details on vendor, amount, date, purpose and responsible department. Accounts that contain protected client information can only be seen in total, without transaction detail, to abide by state and federal privacy regulations.

Budget, expense and vendor data contained within Open Book is updated nightly and dates back to Jan. 1, 2008, to coincide with installation of the county’s current financial software system. Purchasing card activity is uploaded by the end of the month following the statement period and is available starting from Feb. 1, 2012, the first month following the county’s implementation of online Visa transaction coding.

While the information included on the site has always been available by request, Eagle County Communications Director Kris Friel says providing the data online illustrates the organization’s commitment to transparency. “By allowing 24/7 access to the county’s checkbook in a format that is easy to navigate, we can strengthen our accountability to stakeholders, encourage public participation in government and increase awareness of all the services we provide,” she said.

Additional information accessible through the Open Eagle County portal includes commissioner agendas and supporting materials, live and archived videos of commissioner and other board meetings, email subscriptions to county news and agendas, links to the county’s social media sites and more. Planned future additions to the portal consist of yearly salary listings, job descriptions and county contracts. Open Eagle County is available at www.eaglecounty.us/openeaglecounty.

Open Book and the Open Eagle County portal were developed in-house by the county’s Communications, Finance and Innovation & Technology departments. For more information, contact Friel at 970-328-8617 or at kris.friel@eaglecounty.us.
