County to fund retrofit, discontinue child care center subsidies

The Eagle County Board of Commissioners have approved a $27,500 bid from McBoyd Builders, Inc. of Eagle to fix a design deficiency at the county-owned Miller Ranch Community Center that has prevented the child care facility from operating at capacity since its opening. From 2006 to 2010, Eagle County subsidized the center by up to $45,000 per year to cover the lost revenues, representing approximately four student spaces.

The Miller Ranch Child Care Center, which is run by the Eagle Valley Child Care Association (EVCCA), is located within the community center at 25 Mill Loft St. in Edwards. The county currently charges EVCCA $1 per year in rent; however, that lease is in the process of being renegotiated. In addition, the county has discontinued the annual cash subsidy.

“We certainly appreciate the high quality services that the Eagle Valley Child Care Association provides to our local families,” said Commissioner Jon Stavney. “This solution is win-win, providing additional child care spots in our community while reducing the county’s monetary contribution,” Stavney said.

“Our partnership with Eagle County has allowed us to serve over 400 families at our Miller Ranch location over the last four years,” said Amy Drummet, Executive Director of EVCCA. “We appreciate the county’s support and are looking forward to providing safe, quality child care at Miller Ranch for many years to come.”
