The Eagle County Board of Commissioners is seeking input from the boating community and others on increasing public access to the Colorado River. Several parecels between State Bridge and Dotsero are under contract for purchase through the county's Open Space Fund.

Historically, the majority of Colorado River use in the county has been upstream of State Bridge, or near Dotsero downstream from Cottonwood. According to Eagle County Open Space Director Toby Sprunk, these heavily used segments would greatly benefit from more dispersed boating. “A lack of public access is leaving approximately 40 miles of river underutilized,” said Sprunk. “Under-appreciation of this segment of the Colorado puts it at risk for future water development, while increased use would benefit the local economy,” he said.

In addition, the existing Dotsero boat takeout will be vacated in two years when the Colorado Department of Transportation is scheduled to build a new bridge. The Dotsero master plan identifies the need for better utilization of the area as a recreational gateway.
