Commissioner appointed to FirstNet Colorado board

Contact: Commissioner Kathy Chandler-Henry, 970-328-8605

May 14, 2015 – Eagle County Commissioner Kathy Chandler-Henry has been appointed as the Colorado Counties, Inc. representative to the governing body of FirstNet Colorado. The group is charged with guiding efforts to create a statewide public safety broadband wireless network.

The mission of the First Responder Network Authority, or FirstNet, is to build, operate and maintain a nationwide, high-speed, wireless broadband network dedicated to public safety. FirstNet is intended to provide a single interoperable platform for emergency and daily public safety communications.

FirstNet Colorado’s role is to determine the best possible implementation of the national public safety broadband network within the state. Per the legislation that created FirstNet, states may either choose to accept the FirstNet network deployment plan, or develop their own Radio Access Network (RAN).  If Colorado opts to build its own RAN, the state must secure both Federal Communications Commission and National Telecommunications and Information Administration approval, and may seek funding support.
The governing body for FirstNet Colorado is responsible for ensuring the interests of all counties, municipalities and tribes are represented during the decision-making process on implementation. “This network is particularly important in mountain communities, where communications can be hindered by terrain,” said Chandler-Henry. “It’s critical that we create a network that will provide the best communication system possible for public safety agencies in all areas of the state.”
