Controlled burns scheduled for Bellyache Ridge

Contact: Eric Lovgren, Wildfire Mitigation Manager, 970-328-8742 or

In a cooperative effort with Eagle River Fire Protection District, Colorado State Forest Service and the Bellyache Homeowners Association, Eagle County will be conducting controlled burns of several slash piles in the vicinity of Bellyache Ridge Road and Big Dipper Road during the coming weeks. Firefighters will be burning dead slash on the ground resulting from the removal of bark beetle-infested trees. A detailed prescription of acceptable weather and fuel conditions must exist before a controlled burn can take place.

Smoke and flames will be visible throughout the area during the burn. Homeowners in the area are asked to secure all windows and doors so that smoke does not enter structures; keep all pets inside so they are not bothered by fire personnel in the area; and stay clear of heavy equipment and crews working.

Residents will be notified on the day of the burn through variable message signs and through EC Alert, the county’s emergency message system. Visit to subscribe to receive timely updates on road closures, weather conditions and other important information via text message and/or e-mail.
