Commissioners provide notice to Clerk & Recorder on potential ballot issues

In anticipation of the Nov. 2 General Election, notice has been provided to the Eagle County Clerk indicating the Board of County Commissioners may place two questions on the ballot. One potential ballot question would address medical marijuana businesses in Eagle County; the second would ask voters to weigh in on whether to increase commissioner term limits from two, four-year terms to three terms.

Staff from the Eagle County Attorney’s Office is currently researching commissioner term limits in other Colorado counties. A public meeting is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Aug. 2 to present the information and gather citizen input. Those unable to attend may send comments in advance to bryan.treu@eaglecounty.us. The meeting will be aired live on ecotv18, channel 18 on the county’s two cable systems, and streamed online at www.eaglecounty.us.

A public input session on the commercial aspect of medical marijuana took place earlier this month, and included an overview of new state legislation that requires all medical marijuana dispensaries to obtain both local and state licensing to continue operations. The law also allows local jurisdictions to put additional licensing regulations in place or to ban dispensaries entirely, either by commissioner action or by a vote of the people.

If the commissioners decide to proceed with the ballot questions, resolutions including specific ballot language will need to be considered and adopted by the board during a public meeting no later than Sept. 3. For more information, contact Bryan Treu at 970-328-8685.
