Eagle County seeks volunteers for Animal Response Team

Contact: Nathan Lehnert, Animal Field Services Manager, 970-328-2444,

Oct. 3, 2017 – Eagle County and several community partners will host a coordinated training from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 14 at the Eagle River Center, located at the Eagle County Fairgrounds, for those interested in serving on a volunteer Animal Response Team. Lunch will be provided.

The training is targeted at residents who want to volunteer with an ongoing Eagle County Animal Response Team. Individuals participating in the Oct. 14 training must already be trained in the National Incident Management System (NIMS), which includes courses ICS-700 and ICS-100. NIMS training resources are available online at:

The Animal Response Team training will offer hands-on learning opportunities for sheltering animals and provide an overview of how to assist with evacuation and relocation of domestic animals and livestock during emergency situations.

The Animal Response Team may be activated when:

  • An emergency situation forces an evacuation from an area that also is home to domestic animals that could potentially be harmed by the approaching emergency situation.
  • A transportation accident involving livestock requires assistance from community animal resources.
  • An emergency situation involving animal health or public health arises that requires action concerning animal populations in the community.

Partners coordinating and leading the training include Eagle County Animal Services, Eagle County Emergency Management, Colorado State University Extension, Colorado Veterinary Medical Reserve Corps, Eagle Valley Humane Society and Mountain Valley Horse Rescue.

Those interested in participating should RSVP to by Oct. 10.
