Contact: Animal Services at 970-328-3647 or animal.services@eaglecounty.us

August 1, 2014 - Natural disasters and other emergencies can occur at any time. Being prepared to leave your home briefly or permanently means having a plan for important personal effects and your pets. There are six basic steps to emergency preparedness for pets, which are detailed at the following website, in both English and Spanish, along with special considerations for the various types of pet: http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/disaster-preparedness

In brief, the steps are:

  • Step 1: Get a Rescue Alert - Free from ASPCA.org or purchase at your pet store.
  • Step 2: Arrange a Safe Haven - Never leave pets behind when you evacuate.
  • Step 3: Emergency Supplies and Traveling Kits - Evac-Pac on hand for pets.
  • Step 4: Choose Designated Caregivers - Boarding kennels for short-term care, relatives or friends as permanent pet foster parents.
  • Step 5: Evacuation Preparedness - Steps for making an evacuation safe and rapid.
  • Step 6: Geographic and Climatic Considerations - Is your area prone to natural disasters? If so, plan accordingly.

The best thing you can do for yourself and your pets is be prepared.
