County to partner with United Way on social investment grants

Contact: Kathy Chandler-Henry, Chair, Eagle County Commissioners at 970-328-8605 or John Genova, President, United Way of Eagle River Valley at 713-205-3720.

May 12, 2015 – In a change for 2016, Eagle County will partner with the United Way of Eagle River Valley to administer a portion of the county’s annual community grant program. Organizations intending to request funding for programs and services supporting social investment, including enhancing access to shelter, medical care, food, employment, safety and early childhood development, should apply through the United Way. This includes organizations that provide such services in the Roaring Fork Valley.

Applications are available at www.unitedwayeagle.org or by request to Executive Director Rebecca Kanaly at executivedirector@unitedwayeagle.org or at 303-994-2622. The deadline to apply is May 31. Financial grants will be awarded in July.

Commissioner Kathy Chandler-Henry says the partnership will provide opportunities to reduce costs while increasing the effectiveness of both entities in identifying gaps and meeting critical community needs. “The United Way’s well-defined process should serve to strengthen our non-profits by providing a stable and consistent method by which to request funding,” said Chandler-Henry.

According to John Genova, president of the United Way of Eagle River Valley, the organization’s rigorous evaluation process ensures funds are allocated to the most efficiently managed charities serving the county's greatest social needs, while holding agencies accountable for the money they receive. "By working together, we allow for a more efficient grant application and review process,” he said.

Eagle County will provide $100,000 to the United Way for 2016. Funding for additional community grant program areas will be determined during the county's budget process, which is slated to begin in late summer.
