ECO Transit has evolved to meet the changing needs of a growing region and must now focus on long-term success.
Over the last 15 years, the population of Eagle County has grown 162 percent: from 22,000 people to more than 50,000. Meanwhile, ECO Transit ridership has outpaced population growth: from 255,000 annual boardings to around 750,000—an increase of 191 percent. In an era when the nation has generally shunned public transportation in favor of the personal automobile, especially in the west, Eagle County has cultivated a thriving transit system.
In 2001, ECO Transit assumed the title of regional transportation provider. Since then, ECO Transit has been adjusting to the transition from small, fledgling transit service to a professional, round-the-clock operation.
It appears the department has reached a plateau with ridership and service hours growing, but much more slowly than in the past. Administratively, ECO has finally fit its shoes and while ECO has responded well to today's challenges, we must prepare for what lies ahead.
