2030 Transit Vision

According to various experts, Eagle County’s population is expected to double over the next 25 years. Trip-making, primarily in personal automobiles, will grow even faster. Commuting is expected to increase 30-fold if the county is to meet its demand for labor. These factors will impact the region’s fragile ecosystem, natural beauty, community character, and quality of life. Eagle County is fortunate to have residents and decision-makers who exhibit great concern about the future of the region and possess strong abilities to respond.

Transportation will be critical to Eagle County’s future environmental quality and livability. ECO Transit has developed a vision of maintaining mobility while enhancing community character, the preservation of the natural environment, and the quality of life in Eagle County. This vision encompasses a combination of transit, land use and housing components.

2030 Transit Vision

Eagle County has the second highest rate of work-related transit in the State. Together, ECO Transit, Avon, and Vail provide over 5 million person trips per year on transit, or about 4 percent of all transportation trips in the county. The county must cultivate a robust land use and transportation system that relies less and less on the automobile simply to maintain this 4 percent mode split.

ECO Transit envisions an ambitious transit network composed of a regional “spine”, a series of local circulator/feeder bus routes, and an infrastructure that truly supports bicycling and walking. Land use and housing policies outlined in the Eagle County Comprehensive Plan set the foundation for this multi-modal system.

Intermountain Connection Fixed Guideway
The regional spine of the transportation system is called the Intermountain Connection, a fixed guideway system using Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) or an equivalent technology that allows efficient, high-speed, high-capacity access along the I-70 corridor.
