Dowd Junction recreation trail repairs begin Sept. 27

Contact: Gregg Barrie, Town of Vail Landscape Architect, 970-470-2337

Work will begin Sept. 27 to repair portions of the Gore Valley Trail through Dowd Junction that were damaged by the spring floods. Retaining walls, located along the eastern most section of the trail will be permanently repaired over the next two weeks. Work will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The contractor is B&B Excavating.

Efforts will be made to keep the recreation trail open as much as possible; however, with a limited work area, short closures will be required beginning Sept. 27 and continuing through Sept. 29. Users should anticipate delays of up to 15 minutes during the three-day period. The town is asking trail users to plan accordingly.

Once the initial retaining wall rock work has been completed, the contractor has been asked to keep a portion of the trail accessible at all times.

While the town recognizes the significant use of the trail this time of year, the Colorado Division of Wildlife requires all work within this section of Gore Creek be completed by Sept. 30 to avoid impacts to trout spawning beds. The Dowd Junction section of the trail will close for the season with the first significant snowfall for safety and maintenance considerations as well as to limit impacts to deer migration, per the Division of Wildlife.
