Wildfire Mitigation

Eagle County strives to create fire-adapted communities through a holistic approach to wildfire preparedness. Regulations were adopted in 2003 to create a standard for development in wildfire prone areas. Amendments to the Eagle County Building Resolution were made in 2004 to reduce structural venerability to wildfire through the use of fire resistant construction and the creation of defensible space.

This regulatory approach to minimizing catastrophic wildfire loss in our community is addressed through the careful review of building permits and land use proposals. Further non-regulatory mitigation efforts in Eagle County include a countywide Community Wildfire Protection Plan and Wildfire Hazard Map; the formation of the Eagle County Wildfire Council and Ready! Set! Go! Program; as well as numerous grant-funded forest health and fuel reduction projects including the Vail Valley Forest Heath Project in 2007-2008.
