Post-holiday recycling event Saturday, Jan. 13

Contact: John Gitchell,  Environmental Manager, 970-328-8766,

Jan. 3, 2018 – Walking Mountains Science Center, Vail Honeywagon, Town of Avon, Eagle County and other local partners will host a post-holiday event for difficult to recycle items from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13 at the Walking Mountains facility at 318 Walking Mountains Lane in Avon.

A wide variety of items will be accepted at the event, including:

  • Electronics
  • Styrofoam
  • Bulbs and batteries
  • Paper for shredding
  • Holiday lights
  • Clothing and textiles

Eagle County produces nearly 100,000 tons of waste per year. About 17 percent of that total gets recycled; the rest is buried in the county landfill. Even more trash – about 25 percent more nationwide – is generated during the holidays.

This post-holiday recycling event provides the community with an option to reduce their environmental impact during the holidays and makes it easier to recycle what matters most. Old computers, monitors, cell phones, TVs, batteries and florescent tubes all contain toxic substances like lead and mercury, so keeping these electronic waste items out of landfills is especially important.

Residents who anticipate bringing large loads to the event are highly encouraged to provide advance notification by calling 970-476-3511. Fees will apply for recycled electronics, bulbs and batteries, as well as for paper shredding. Please note that payment is accepted via cash or check only.

For questions about the event, please contact Vail Honeywagon at 970-476-3511.
