Community members urged to get the flu shot

Contact: Rebecca Larson, MPH, Disease Prevention & Control Managerm, 970-328-9820, rebecca.larson@eaglecounty.us

Oct. 17, 2016 – As flu season approaches, community members are encouraged to protect themselves by getting vaccinated as soon as possible. Influenza cases typically increase in Eagle County with the influx in visitors in November, and it takes about two weeks for the flu shot to provide full protection.

The vaccine is available from local health care providers, clinics, and pharmacies throughout the county and most health insurance plans cover the cost. To locate the nearest flu vaccine, visit flushot.healthmap.org

Eagle County Public Health is offering $14 flu shots to uninsured children, as well as to children covered by Medicaid or an insurance that does not cover the cost of flu vaccine. No one will be turned away due to inability to pay. Eagle County Public Health is also an in-network provider for Rocky Mountain Health Plans and CHP+ and will bill insurance for all covered persons. See below for the walk-in flu clinic schedule:

Influenza is a preventable illness and flu shots are critical to keeping families and communities healthy. Everyone 6 months of age and older should be vaccinated against the flu every year. The Center for Disease Control recommends only injectable flu shots this year. The nasal flu vaccine (FluMist) is not recommended.

Eagle County Public Health has partnered with FluNearYou.org on a real-time disease tracking system to assist in flu prevention. Community members can aid in the effort by visiting www.flunearyou.org/eaglecounty. For more information on the flu, visit www.eaglecounty.us/flu.
