Master Plans
Master Planning in Eagle County involves a broad range of stakeholders, from land management agencies to service providers, from community organizations to individual citizens. Master Plans are guiding documents in Eagle County (they are not regulatory) and provide a description of present conditions as well as a vision for the future. Good master plans are reality based, and include tools and suggestions that can be implemented to achieve desired goals. They are used by developers, staff, elected and appointed officials, departments and citizens for a variety of planning purposes. A public process is followed to gather input from the community as master plans are assembled, thus assuring representation of the desires of the people of Eagle County to the greatest degree possible.
There is a single Eagle County Comprehensive Master Plan, but there are also other plans that address trails, open space, watersheds, housing, the airport, etc. Most plans have a 10 to fifteen year horizon. The Planning Department is often engaged updating plans though a public process to keep them as current as possible. Each municipality also has a master plan to provide direction within its incorporated boundary. The location of a project or a land use application within the county determines which of the plans should be reviewed for master plan conformance.

Comprehensive Plan

The latest update to the Eagle County Comprehensive Plan was adopted by the Eagle County Planning Commission in December 2005. It provides a thorough discussion of planning topics and concerns, following a format of goals and policies, and includes long lists of possible implementation strategies at the end of each chapter. When accessed by computer, the document provides considerable utility through the use of internal and external links, which allow the reader to move about quickly within the document, and also to access planning or data related web sites. All table of content items, for example, are internally linked.
